Strong agenda helps technology conference to become most popular UK event ever
This year's Altair Technology Conference attracted an audience of over 250 engineering professionals, cementing its reputation as a key fixture in the industry's calendar. The conference, held on 2 November at the Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon, featured keynote speeches from Richard Parry Jones of Ford, Mike Giles of Gibbs Technologies and Chris Wilkinson of BAE SYSTEMS Aerostructures. In addition, delegates enjoyed technical presentations from leading companies demonstrating cutting edge applications for CAE (computer aided engineering) and design optimisation technologies.
The keynote speeches centred on the themes of innovation, agility and the changing global marketplace. Richard Parry Jones discussed Ford's strategy for using innovation and simulation technologies as a vital part of failure mode avoidance - Ford's definition of reliability. Mike Giles explained the challenges and rewards of designing the world's fastest amphibious car, the Aquada. Chris Wilkinson discussed how a more intelligent integration of the global supply chain will help British companies to make the most of emerging engineering opportunities.
The conference showcased the power of Altair's CAE technologies and identified current trends and future directions in virtual product design and development. CAE practitioners from diverse companies such as Ford, Jaguar, Airbus, Schlumberger and Linpac shared their experiences of solving challenging design problems using the advanced technologies within Altair's HyperWorks suite. Highlights included Ford's $1.1 million a year saving on a single component and the weight saving of more than 500kg per aircraft on the Airbus A380 - both attributed to the use of Altair OptiStruct, part of HyperWorks.
The busy exhibition hall enabled partners to demonstrate their own products, solutions and services. Also on show were a range of products successfully and profitably brought to market using Altair's consulting expertise and CAE solutions.
Dr Royston Jones, managing director of Altair Engineering in the UK was delighted by the success of the conference: "Altair's conferences have always attracted high profile speakers and presenters, since they generally understand that advancements in CAE are vital for the success and competitiveness of companies in the global manufacturing industry. We had more delegates than ever at this year's event, which is a clear reflection of the growing understanding among design engineers of the need to keep up to date with the very latest opinions, trends and technologies."
