Exploring the Design of a Medical System with Rapid 1D System Simulation
For a recent project, Altran, a leading global engineering consultant company, designed a fluidic circuit for a hemodialysis system. One of the main requirements for hemodialysis is to keep the temperature of the dialysis solution stable while it is flowing through the device. To achieve this, they investigated different layouts and optimal parameters for the fluidic system to minimize heat loss. Since the Finite Element model comprised of more than 7 million elements, they decided to explore different, more rapid simulation strategies for the design exploration stage. Reduced Order Models (ROM) were created using Altair Activate® and Compose® and were validated through comparison with existing CFD models. The use of ROMs, with 30x shorter simulation time, was not just ideal for quick optimization of the system, but also allowed Altran Engineers to challenge, and significantly alter the existing design of the circuit by increasing the number of considered layouts by 1000% (from 5 to 55).

BOTTPOWER Designs Lightweight Bracket for Motorbike
BOTT stands for “Battle of the Twins,” a racing category for motorbikes with two-cylinder four stroke engines.

Bottpower is a Spanish motorsport engineering company located in Valencia. They specialize in designing and building custom motorbikes for racing and street use. They design and build parts, systems, and prototypes for other companies.

A project challenge at Bottpower was to design a lightweight stay bracket for their motorbike that could withstand the main and aerodynamic loads. The goal was finding the optimal weight and stiffness ratio to reduce weight while ensuring safety measures. All of this had to be done quickly in order to arrive on time at Addit3D, Spain's most important 3D-print fair, to showcase the bike. The optimal design for aerodynamic loads was found using Altair software.

Reduction of Moving Masses – Streamlined Design for Improved Engine Performance
To expand the rpm range of a motorcycle engine, a new type of rocker arm with lower inertia was needed at KTM. The new rocker arm was required to have the same, or better stiffness and deformation level as the previous design. KTM used Altair HyperWorks™ for nonlinear topology optimization and nonlinear structural analysis to develop the new rocker arm. Thanks to this, the component inertia could be reduced by 15 percent, component mass was reduced by 21 percent, and the stiffness increased by 14 percent which lead to an extension of the rotational speed by 150-200 rpm.

As part of the Renault Chassis Le Mans plant, which is building car-to-ground connecting components for the Renault Group and for the Alliance, the CTC Chassis Technical Center is a CAD engineering center where 350 engineers and technicians are working with a focus on testing and validation. Renault has been using SimSolid to perform simulations to develop lighter chassis faster.

Taking Off with Simulation
New airborne solutions are being developed to accommodate one or more persons for air travel. Explorations including large drones, small helicopters, airplanes, and flying cars will enable companies to respond to the demand for Personal Air Mobility (PAM). The team at Talaria was founded by students at the Delft University of Technology. The idea for Talaria’s Individual Air Mobility project began at the end of 2017. Founder Philipp Essle heard about the Boeing GoFly competition which rewarded the best designs for a one-person aircraft. Talaria’s mission is to develop an electrically driven PAM that can take-off and land vertically in urban environments. Talaria is using Altair Inspire to check whether material and weight could be reduced through topology optimization. This approach resulted in a significant 1.5-kilogram weight reduction of the rotor hubs.

Virtual Design and Testing of a Medical Autoinjector, Project Overview

Drivers...Start Your Simulation? University of Texas – Arlington uses Altair SimLab™ and Altair Optistruct™ to design an adjustable pedal box for their Formula SAE racecar
Formula SAE is a collegiate design series run by Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), which challenges students to design, build and compete with an open wheel style car across various events. The competition pitches various teams across different static events focusing on the teams engineering design decisions, cost planning, marketing strategies and vehicle inspections. The teams also have to compete under various dynamic events like acceleration, skid-pad, autocross and the endurance run where even the fuel economy is checked.

Canadian start-up company Philomec specializes in mechanical engineering services that helps companies design and optimize their products using mechanical and biomechanical FEM simulation. Their creation of customized, validated biomechanical models, and the analysis of simulation results by experts allows surgeons to choose the model of an implant and adapt surgical maneuvers to a specific patient, thus reducing the number of implants used, as well as the risk of complications. It is challenging to validate biomechanical models due to the complexity of materials, scarcity of experimental data, and the lack of representation of variability. The application of Altair HyperWorks for explicit multiphysics simulation provides a high-level of confidence in the validity and stability of the musculoskeletal models.

Digital Architects
To build a very simple, robust, sustainable roof structure for a prosthesis lab associated with the Centre medico-chirurgical de l'Ulcère de Buruli, which is a hospital in Bouaké, on the Ivory Coast of Africa, the project team used Altair SimSolid, to conduct very fast, full assembly tests, saving time and money, while providing increased flexibility, without compromising accuracy.

E-motor Design using Multiphysics Optimization

Czech company Duratec Ltd. develops handmade bike frames using both aluminium and composite materials. Andron Handling
Andron Handling needed to assess the strength of the welded fabrication and vertical clamping arms for both lifting and clamping loads. In previous analysis of this type in Altair SimSolid™, they would have removed the wheels from the model and applied reaction forces at the bottom of each of the clamp arms. In this case, Andron used a different approach that would not have been possible with previous FEA toolsets.

Mabe is a Mexico-based international appliance company designing, producing and distributing a wide spectrum of home appliances such as washing machines, dryers, cooking ranges, refrigerators, air-conditioners, microwaves, etc. Altair technology has enabled Mabe to increase the capacity of their washing machines by 35%, and the spin speed by 24% while reducing the cost per cubic foot by 10%.

Optimisation of a Collapsible Economic Container “COLLAPSECON"
At the forefront of innovation at CEC Systems is the world’s first semi-automated Collapsible-Economic-Container. Achieving a 4:1 ratio, COLLAPSECON® enables 4 empty containers to be collapsed and combined to form a single container, improving operational efficiency, enhancing return on investment and reducing the impact on the environment. For the design for mass production and optimal operational use, the Altair HyperWorks Suite was leveraged to find solutions for weight reduction without increasing manufacturing costs. The newly engineered container is potentially 30% lighter than the original design, whilst reducing material requirements, increasing manufacturing efficiency, and reducing cost.

Museum of the 20th Century
For a competition launched for the Museum of the 20th Century, Zaha Hadid Architects re-invented a similarly radical approach by applying new advances in technology to generate structural and architectural expression. With Altair’s assistance, they created a plug-in for their design tool, enabling topology optimization. Altair HyperMesh was used for finite element preprocessing mesh generation, with Altair HyperView providing post-processing and visualization solutions. Structural analysis solver Altair OptiStruct provided advanced analysis and optimization algorithms.

Optimization of Photovoltaic (PV) Mounting Structures – Savings on Material and Cost
Photovoltaic specialist Thesan, a subsidiary of global manufacturer Savio S.p.A, manufactures, and distributes mounting structures, consisting of a so-called Purlin, a Rafter, and a Pole (and Hat), designed to withstand potentially occurring loads from wind and snow, as well as dead loads. Real-Time Foundation Monitoring for Omnifor
In the western part of the Netherlands, the soil has insufficient bearing capacity to allow for the construction of buildings and houses. To overcome this issue, buildings in this area have been built on timber pile foundations. These foundations have to be fully submerged in water to avoid pile deterioration from rotting and fungi. Property owners wanted a way to monitor the structural condition of their timber pile foundations. Omnifor teamed up with Altair SmartWorks and created a platform for structural health monitoring to track any signs of deterioration or shifting of the foundation. Data is collected at a specific rate to track the evolution of the deterioration along with an estimate of how long the property owner has until repairs are necessary.

The challenge in the development of Arcimoto’s SRK Generation 8; an all-electric, multi-purpose/utility commuter vehicle, included creation of an optimized platform that offers
3-wheeled stability, a space frame enclosure for protection, and a rear swing arm that handles the load requirements and also follows the visual design of the vehicle. HyperMesh® provided an environment for rapid model generation allowing Arcimoto to answer queries by helping them perform the analysis in OptiStruct® in an easy, time efficient manner. Using RADIOSS® for the physics helped them achieve repeatable and accurate results, reduce simulation cycle times and allow for evaluating multiple design scenarios thus enabling better decisions.

Using HyperWorks® to Optimize Structural Strength for Argon 18 High-performance Bikes
Argon 18 recently partnered with the ÉTS Research Chair on Engineering of Processing, Materials and Structures for Additive Manufacturing to manufacture a new track bike for Lasse Norman Hansen, one of the athletes competing for the Danish team in track cycling at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Their aim was to develop a bike that was stiffer, highly integrated, more aerodynamic, providing greater efficiency. An important aspect of the project was the development of a new aluminum stem to be used by Mr. Hansen in the Flying Lap event which is achieved by the fastest lap from the moving start. Better Indoor Climate thanks to Simulation and Optimization

Surrogate Models for Antenna Placement on Large Platforms
The RF Engineering group at the Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC), develops advanced computational electromagnetics and multiphysics algorithms and tools, leveraging vast know-how in EMC for a wide range of applications. Typical challenges include electrically-large and multi-scale EM problems such as antenna placement on large platforms, and mutiphysics problems such as the electrical –thermal–mechanical analysis of composite materials. In a project that dealt with electrically large platforms, an efficient modelling tool was required to identify optimum antenna positions and minimize interference between various antennas. FEKO was used during the development process, helping to determine the design parameters of the surrogate models using its powerful optimization function.

More Efficient and Economic Injection Mold Tools thanks to Topology Optimization, CFD Simulation and 3D Printing
Toolmaking is usually characterized by cost-intensive, custom made, single-unit production. To create innovative tools, the industry increasingly relies on new manufacturing methods such as 3D printing. To meet market demand, PROTIQ GmbH, a spinoff from Phoenix Contact needed to increase productivity through more efficient injection mold tools. The Altair solution included development of optimized tools using simulation, optimization and additive manufacturing (model setup with HyperMesh, topology optimization and FE analysis with OptiStruct, CFD analysis with AcuSolve and refinement with solidThinking Evolve. The benefits included increased productivity due to shorter production cycles, weight reduction of 75%, shortened development time and production costs reduced by 25%.

MIT, Pune
A university team at MIT, Pune used topology optimization and additive manufacturing to develop two new designs for the Quad-rotor UAV drone that were lighter and stronger than previous designs.  

Less Interior Squeak and Rattle Noise Using a Simulation Driven Design Approach
In the development of new vehicles, the PSA Group aimed to detect Squeak and Rattle (S&R) problems before availability of physical testing. This led to a collaboration between PSA’s method development engineering team and Altair’s domain experts.

Explicit Dynamic Simulation of Tool Drop on the Outer Wing of the Swift020 Unmanned Aerial System using Radioss®
The successful launch of a new platform UAS is a comprehensive design engineering and manufacturing endeavor. The full lifecycle must consider maintenance and replacement components. As these requirements often require the use of tools (i.e. screw drivers, wrenches, pliers), the concern became apparent that as the flight surfaces are minimum gage, heavy tools dropped on the structure could cause irreparable damage. The objective of this project was to determine the specification for maximum maintenance tool weight such that, if dropped from a nominal height of 0.762 meters, would not cause permanent damage to any part of the Swift020 UAS. The Altair solution included a Radioss Explicit Dynamic Impact Simulation.

Developing Efficient Design Procedures for Wideband, Low-profile Antennas Using Altair FEKO Electromagnetic Simulation Technology
Low profile, concealed antennas are frequently desired for diverse applications across many military and commercial vehicle platforms. A vehicle underside can be considered a viable alternative place for concealment as it provides enough space to avoid extreme antenna miniaturization. A study conducted at the Antenna Research Group (ARG) at the University of Colorado evaluated the bottom side of the vehicle as an alternative to more conventional antenna placement positions for mounting high-frequency VHF antenna systems. Altair FEKO EM field simulation methods were applied to assess antenna performance.

Characterizing the Murchison Widefield Array Beam Pattern
A precursor to the SKA, the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) radio telescope was constructed in the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory in Western Australia. In order to correctly calibrate and image the data collected by the radio telescope, it is imperative that the beam pattern is known accurately. In this study, a rigorous approach was applied where the full array geometry was simulated using FEKO with a goal to characterize the beam pattern of the MWA and demonstrate that this approach was more accurate.

Ryerson’s International Hyperloop Team
Ryerson's International Hyperloop Team utilized finite element analysis and topology optimization to redesign a metal additive manufactured motor bracket. PolyNURBS was used to make the design 3D print-friendly.

Integrating antennas in windscreens has become popular due to the enhanced aesthetics and the increased antenna surface area that enables improved reception. However, the design of such antennas is a complex procedure. Antenna systems contain different antennas with mutual coupling, making it very inefficient and time consuming to optimize the FM-, DAB-, RKE- and TV antennas independently. Wanting to make the optimization process of its multi-port antenna more efficient, Daimler turned to Altair for assistance.

Ankers performed co-simulation using a combined multibody and brake systems model in MotionView and Activate to generate more accurate results to analyze thermal and other effects on braking.

Wilson Golf/Driver vs. Driver
Altair’s work on Driver vs. Driver, Wilson Golf’s television competition that followed aspiring golf club designers in their journey to develop Wilson’s next club in production. Our industrial design team worked with each of the contestants to develop and model the designs in Evolve while our CFD experts helped them simulate and optimize the aerodynamics of the club in Virtual Wind Tunnel.

PaceControls developed its 3rd generation Android-based HVACR Equipment control, which satisfied all project requirements and had 0 defect escapes, by implementing a Model Based Design (MBD) process.
